Within Northamptonshire County Council’s Libraries & Information Service are the Northamptonshire Studies collections. These have all kinds of material about Northamptonshire. They include printed books, maps, photographs and manuscripts covering Northamptonshire’s landscape, economy, people and diverse communities. The largest collection is held in Northamptonshire Central Library, while most main libraries in the county have a range of materials about their local area. Please note, however, originals of official and personal records are held at Northamptonshire Record Office.

John Clare – The romantic poet. Original notes, poems, letters and his library.

Sir Henry Dryden – Antiquarian, archaeologist and draughtsman. Drawings, watercolours and notes covering Britain and Europe.

H E Bates – Writer. Original manuscripts and letters; articles and books about his life and work.

Charles Bradlaugh – Radical politician and free-thinker. Original letters, illustrations, printed speeches and pamphlets.

J L Carr – writer, publisher and artist. Books, pamphlets, articles and maps by and about the author.

Philip Doddridge – influential nonconformist. Original letters, printed sermons and other works.

Mary Pendered – writer. Original manuscripts, articles and essays.

Map collections – including historic county maps dating from 1576; old and modern ordnance survey mapping.

Photographic archive – A selection of images from our photo archive dating from c.1860 to present.
